So, mix cds and books are currency here, traded in excited whispers in the volunteer lounge or over the rare coffee in the cafe frequented by every ex-pat in the country. My friend Larry, who I trained with over the summer, made me a copy of Tori Amos’s new cd, “Abnormally Attracted to Sin” and I must say, I am quite pleased, no, elated, with the result. I found Tori’s past couple of albums to be utter disappointments, weak imitations of the snarling, stiletto-wearing, piano-grinding goddess she used to be, with all the blunt honesty of break-ups, miscarriages and Jesus. AATS is like a lounge lizard “Choirgirl” with bursts of technicolor, and Tori has maintained her MILF status in the fold-outs.
“There are those, those who give blood, I give love,” she growls on the first track and, funny enough, I can think of no better way to describe the work I believe I am doing in the Peace Corps. So, thanks Tori, for getting back on track and delivering the goods to your die-hards. Much appreciated in Mongolia.
